Making sushi is always fun and it will always taste better if it is homemade because of its freshness. The finished product always looks hard but it is easy to make. Anyone can do it. You can be creative just like those professional chefs in your favorite Asian restaurants. What's even great about it is that you can choose your own stuff in your sushi and your style. Do you know that you don't need special tools in your sushi? You have everything at home! The quality of your homemade sushi will depend on your ingredients which you can just pick on your local supermarket or you can use whatever is available at home and your skills will define the taste.


There are two basic types of sushi. The hand-shaped sushi is called "Nigiri Sushi". It is rice with fresh raw fish on top. And the second one is the rolled sushi or the popular "Maki Sushi". It is rice rolled in nori seaweed with fish and veggies or other ingredients inside. Don't get intimidated, rolling your sushi is easier as it looks. To make the preparation extra special, you will need a classy Sushi plate that will look perfect in any rolls you'll make. Plus chopsticks to make it more authentic!




1.) Seaweed Sheet (Nori)

2.) Chia Seeds or Sesame Seeds (optional)

3.) Cooked Sushi Rice (any brand of your choice)

4.) Bamboo Mat (Don't worry, if you don't have a bamboo mat, you can always use a thick towel.)

5.) Soy sauce (whatever is available)

6.) Wasabi and pickled ginger (this is optional and will depend on your taste but will definitely make your sushi a lot tastier)

7.) Your favorite veggies like carrots, cucumber, lettuce, radish, sprouts, bell peppers, onions, jalapeno or whatever veggies are available and will depend on your taste.

8.) You can also add sweet fruits like mango, pineapple, papaya or any fruit of your choice.

9.) Next is your protein, you can add shrimp tempura, sashimi grade tuna, salmon or crab meat.


Slice your ingredients like your chosen veggies and fruits together with your protein nicely. This time place the seaweed on top of your bamboo mat or towel with a layer of prepared sushi rice and flatten it gently. With sushi rice, you may want to make it sticky by adding seasoning to your rice and soy sauce depending on the taste you want and mix. Now place your desired ingredients onto the rice and roll it nicely. The thick towel acts just like a bamboo mat and also wipes up your mess when you’re done because it’s so flexible it allows you to shape and roll the rice effortlessly. After, you can even top your rolls with anything like a thin slice of avocado.
